Operation Montanha Verde, coordinated by Zoomarine, is back! A citizenship movement for the protection of the important natural resources of our Algarve.
Although Operation Montanha Verde 2022 had very ambitious goals – planting 42,000 trees in 8 Algarve municipalities- , due to the strong reduction of rainfall, this year’s action was symbolically concentrated in a single planting at the University of Algarve, at Gambelas campus, last Sunday, November 13th.
Due to the close cooperation between Zoomarine and the University, an automated irrigation system was installed, which will hopefully allow a greater success of survival of the young plants.
During one enjoyable morning, about 90 volunteers planted about 1060 trees, shrubs and plants.
The problem of climate change is not new, and it is with many small actions that we can spread the message of urgency in the protection and conservation of our precious natural assets.
Although reduced to one location, Zoomarine’s Operation Montanha Verde 2022 counted on the partnership of several regional and national entities: 08 municipalities (Castro Marim, Faro, Lagos, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel and Silves); University of Algarve, Algar SA, IInstituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas IP, Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente, Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude, Região de Turismo do Algarve, Águas do Algarve SA, Direção-Geral dos Estabelecimentos Escolares – Direção de Serviços da Região Algarve, Europe Direct Algarve and Olimar Reisen.
Since the launch of this volunteering initiative in 2016, Operation Green Mountain has already planted more than 126,000 trees in eight municipalities of the Algarve.
We hope to be able to continue this action, and other equally important ones, in the near future. In the meantime we trust to count on all of you, in the so urgent contribuition to help protect our future.
Together We Protect!
