The Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of endangered marine species and their habitats. With a focus on research, conservation and education, this foundation works tirelessly to protect iconic species such as whales, dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles all over the world. Although their integrated efforts span from Mexico to Indonesia, they have a significant presence in Mozambique, where their work began.
In Mozambique, MMF has implemented a comprehensive education program with the aim of raising awareness and promoting a more sustainable culture in harmony with nature. But MMF’s education program goes beyond just raising awareness; it empowers communities to take an active role in conservation efforts. By providing training and resources, MMF empowers local communities with the skills and knowledge needed to monitor and protect marine habitats, report sightings of endangered species and participate in citizen science initiatives.
It is precisely with an eye on education efforts that Zoomarine, in 2014, established a partnership with MMF and, since then, has actively contributed to the implementation of education efforts in Mozambique. We believe that this grassroots approach not only promotes sustainable practices, but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the marine environment, ensuring that conservation efforts become deeply rooted in the communities themselves.
