Marine turtles play a vital role in our oceans, yet they face numerous challenges today. On July 2nd, a juvenile loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) was discovered disoriented and with abnormal buoyancy by the Association for Marine Environment Research (AIMM).
After assessment and confirmation of the need for rehabilitation by our team, it was rescued and transported to the Zoomarine Shelter Harbor. Initial examinations revealed the presence of foreign bodies in the digestive tract, some of which have been identified as plastic.
Rehabilitation centers like Porto d’Abrigo provide immediate care for sick and injured wild animals to save their lives and are at the forefront of awareness and education efforts regarding conservation threats and their mitigation. As we strive to rehabilitate Umiko and ensure her safe return to the sea, it is essential to emphasize that marine conservation requires a collective effort, as this is a prime example of how dedication and cooperation among various entities can make a difference in conserving our precious marine species.
Umiko’s rescue serves as a reminder of the positive impact we can have when we all come together for the sake of animals. Be part of this mission to protect marine life because Together We Protect!
