Together We Protect

The Brazilian Amazon is currently witnessing a devastating crisis, as a mass mortality event unfolds among Amazon river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and Tucuxi dolphins (Sotalia fluviatilis). In a matter of weeks, we have tragically discovered over 130 deceased animals, equating to roughly 10 Percent of the river dolphin population in the region.

In Brazil, Dr Miriam Marmontel of the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá is at the forefront of root cause research and is taking important steps to protect the surviving animals, many of whom are still in need. However, this endeavour cannot be done alone; the cooperation of others is needed.

YAQU PACHA, in collaboration with the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) and the Nuremberg Zoo, supports Dr. Marmontel and her team in their efforts to save the remaining river dolphins and conduct a comprehensive scientific investigation into the causes of this tragic death. The alarmingly high mortality rate is currently being attributed to rising water temperatures, which have reached a worrying 40 degrees Celsius in certain areas.

The survival of the remaining river dolphins is in dire jeopardy, and they urgently require our intervention to preserve the population within Lago Tefé.

YAQU PACHA, the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF), Nuremberg Zoo, ZOOMARINE Portugal, L’Oceanografic Valencia, Planete Sauvage, LORO PARQUE, the Association Friends of Nuremberg Zoo (TgFNbg) and the European Association for Aquatic Mammals (EAAM) have united in support of this vital rescue operation.

Together, we are providing essential financial resources and deploying skilled veterinarians from the USA and European zoos. Our collective efforts also encompass the coordination of on-site veterinary care.

And everyone can make a difference, which is why the various organizations invite you to participate in this critical mission through a donation, a contribution that will play a fundamental role in rescuing and saving the lives of these dolphins –

Your generosity will make a profound difference in our mission to safeguard the river dolphins.
