On July, 17th, Zoomarine’s Porto d’Abrigo team responded to another urgent appeal from the Association for Research in the Marine Environment (AIMM) by rescuing another young loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta).
On arrival at the rehabilitation centre, the initial diagnostic assessment revealed signs of pneumonia. Plastics were also detected in its faeces, a sad reminder of the dangers that sea turtles face every day in the oceans.
This turtle was affectionately baptised as Ulisses, and is currently recovering at Porto d’Abrigo, where our team is working tirelessly to provide the necessary care until the conditions are met for Ulisses to be returned to the ocean.
The conservation of marine life requires a joint effort, the continuous co-operation between all parties involved and concerned with the protection of these animals is essential. In addition to the coordination between the various organisations that have this same purpose, the involvement with the fishing community is also crucial and can make a huge difference in ensuring a brighter future for sea turtles and the health of the ocean as a whole.
