May 30th, 2023
Every year, on May 31st, we celebrate World Parrot Day, created in 2004 by World Parrot Trust to raise awareness to the need to protect these animals in their natural habitats. Several species of Psittaciformes (the group of birds that include macaws, parrots, cockatoos, and others) are threatened due to constant pressures such as habitat loss, increased pollution and illegal trade.
It is hard to imagine not being safe in the place you call home and having to be in a constant state of alert, as this is how many of these species have to live out their days. Human presence and action are the reason for these threats, but humans are also the ones with the power to fight and counteract these effects. Zoomarine is proud to support conservation projects that take action to mitigate such threats and contribute to the awareness and protection of these species.
To this date, Zoomarine Algarve and its visitors have already contributed with over €70 000 to the World Parrot Trust’s in situ conservation projects and, year after year, will remain committed to joint efforts to make a difference in the lives of these animals, as we do every day with those in our care.
This day serves as a reminder of how important and urgent it is to preserve and contribute to the conservation of these animals, so they may continue to colourfully paint the skies for many long years to come.
