This species can be found in temperate and subarctic waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

In some places they are known as “horse-head seals” due to the shape of the large and elongated head, a characteristic that is quite visible in males.

Males can weigh 660 pounds. Females are smaller, weighing around 370 pounds.
